Jats are an intrepid ethnic group. History has witnessed quite well the bravery and the sacrificial spirit of the Jat people. You must have heard about Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780-1839) and Sardar Bhagat Singh (1907-1931)? It is due to the bravery of the Jat people that they have long been serving in the Indian Army and the Pakistan Army. Jat soldiers have truly made their presence felt in the Punjab Regiment, Jat Regiment, Sikh Regiment, Rajputana Rifles and the Grenadiers. However that is not all. The Jat community has been active in many other fields and walks of life.
Over the years, the Jat community has also contributed a lot to the promotion of games and sports at the international platform. Featuring a strong build, they have shown and proved their mettle in a number of internationally recognized games and sports. Whether it is cricket, wrestling, golf, hockey, football, tennis or boxing, Jat sportsmen are visible almost everywhere.
Take the international game of cricket for example. India has produced such legendary cricketers like Kapil Dev and Navjot Singh Sidhu among others. But Jat sportsmen do not only glorify the history of Indian cricket, they represent the Indian cricket even today. How can you forget such great modern-day cricketers as Virender Sehwag (fondly referred to as ‘Veeru’), Harbhajan Singh (famously known as ‘Bhajji’), Asish Nehra and Praveen Kumar among others? All these sportsmen have not only made a name for them but have brought glory to India many times.
Not only this, regiments like the Rajputana Rifles has also produced many a skilled sports personality. A good population of the Jat community serves the regiment of the Rajputana Rifles. If you are a sports freak, you must have heard about Hony Nb Sub Jagbir Singh Teotia, the winner of the National Open Marathon Championship (1971). Belonging to a small village of Palwal (Haryana), Mr Jagbir Singh also represented India at the Commonwealth Games.
There are numerous other sports and games where the Jat athletes have shown their mettle. Even in recreational games like swimming and race competitions, Jat sportsmen have contributed a lot. Not only male athletes but females also have successfully walked their way to fame in a number international games and sports. In the near future, we hope and wish to witness more and more talents to come up, show their mettle to the world and bring glory and pride to India.
